Kunstfestival 5.7. – 15.7.2017
TellTales is a project aimed at tuning into the diversity and multiplicity of voices in stories and in history. The western European version that is so familiar to us is only one of many, and it is predominantly white, Christian, heteronormative, and in written form. But what of the stories beside this history? The ones that don’t seamlessly blend in? These are episodes, fairytales or truths that take the form of subjective anecdotes from life or historical manifestos. Action and reaction, parallels, opposing forces, hearsay. Breaks in the consistent narration of history are exactly the places where really good stories begin.
TellTales is a two weeks long art festival in Mainz, aiming to relate history and counter-history in four blocks at four different spaces in the city.
The allowance of parallel narratives can challenge, perhaps even debunk, the established narratives about topics like teritorry and borders, the conditions of work or education. Facts and fictions will be shown alongside each other, weaving a new perspective on these themes: Barriers of language make history unaccessible, stories shift into partial experiences that claim to be the truth. Storage spaces become ideal workplaces and we hijack a place of new beginnings.

Geschichte hat viele Stimmen. Die uns vertraute Version ist nur eine davon, und sie ist vorwiegend weiß, europäisch, christlich, heteronormativ, schriftlich. Und die Geschichten neben der Geschichte? Solche, die sich nicht nahtlos einordnen lassen? Episoden, Märchen oder Wahrheiten als subjektiver Schwank aus dem Leben oder historisches Manifest. Aktion und Reaktion, Parallelen, Gegenkräfte, Hörensagen. Brüche in der konsistent erzählten Historie sind genau solche Stellen, an denen die wirklich guten Stories anfangen.
TellTales ist ein zweiwöchiges Kunst- und Kulturfestival in Mainz, das in vier verschieden Kapiteln und an vier Orten in der Stadt erzählt wird.
Es geht darum, Geschichten und Gegengeschichten über Themen wie Territorium und dessen Begrenzung zu verbreiten oder sich über die Bedingungen von Arbeit Gedanken zu machen. Ganz allgemein sind Fakten und Fiktionen nebeneinander gestellt und werden zu neuen Erzählungen verwoben. Dabei türmen sich Barrieren aus Sprache auf, die Historie vielleicht unzugänglich machen. Erzählungen zerfallen in einzelne Bilder, die täuschend echt sind. Lagerräume werden zu idealen Arbeitsräumen und wir kapern einen Ort des Neuanfangs.
