What exactly is work? Toiling and accomplishing! But for what and, particularly, for whom? For a house with a garden? For the good life?
Though work was initially intimately linked with one’s life, home and family in the form of a job or career, industrialization has caused it to be largely outsourced, both geographically and socially. The factory is the site of power, and the power plant a symbol of industrialization, automation and mechanization.
Today the workplace is a new social space in which all areas of life meet up. We seek self-actualization and at the same time social recognition.
By working the person becomes a subject, and conversely the allegedly non-working person becomes socially marginalized.
But can one see every kind of work? Is art work? Is thinking work?
Alongside the narratives of jobholders about production and participation in the market, there are also subtexts that tell of inaction or bring into focus the idea of work without productive intent. We wish to employ artworks to illuminate tensions in the (in)visibility of occupation.

Was ist eigentlich Arbeit? Schuften und Schaffen! Aber für was und vor allem für wen? Ein Haus mit Garten oder etwa ein gutes Leben?
Zunächst als Beruf und Berufung eng mit dem Leben, der Behausung und der Familie verknüpft, wird die Arbeit in der Industrialisierung lokal und sozial ausgelagert. Die Fabrik ist Stätte der Kraft. Das Kraftwerk ist Symbol der Industrialisierung, Automatisierung und Mechanisierung.
Heute ist der Arbeitsplatz ein neuer sozialer Ort, an dem sich sämtliche Bereiche des Lebens wieder treffen. Es wird nach Selbstverwirklichung und gleichzeitig nach gesellschaftlicher Anerkennung gesucht.
Im Tätigsein wir der Mensch Subjekt und umgekehrt gerät der vermeintlich untätige Mensch ins gesellschaftliche Abseits.
Aber kann man jede Arbeit auch sehen? Ist Kunst Arbeit? Ist Denken Arbeit?
Neben der Erzählung der Jobholders von Produktion und Marktteilnahme gibt es auch Subtexte, die vom Nichtstun erzählen oder die Arbeit ohne produktiven Zweck in den Fokus nehmen. Mittels künstlerischer Arbeiten wollen wir das Spannungsfeld von (Un)sichtbarkeit von Tätigkeiten beleuchten.
