The kiosk is a zone of transit. Lingering,
rushing, buying cigarettes, a quick beer for the way, newspapers from yesterday, coffee from the morning, fresh rumors. Here a love story can begin and the newest gossip can be stirred into circulation. The bar is expensive – the kiosk cheap.

The kiosk serves as a provisional trading post for monetary and emotional transactions. Originally stemming from the garden pavilions of the ancient Egyptian and Islamic cultures, it can be understood today as an urban oasis, a place where myths are created and disseminated. Here information exists alongside popular culture: fun and seriousness rub shoulders.

How can one manage to distinguish between the two? When we consider, “that history consists of nothing more than stories, and that these stories report events and happenings and not other forces whose course is predictable, or ideas that develop logically. They become idle or dangerous only when one believes that they can be used as arguments against the reality of occurrences, as if they contained positive clues as to how history “actually” must have taken place.” (Hannah Arendt 1972: Human condition)

The kiosk is an image for the space between lies and deception and the allegedly factual truth. We want to use artistic work to show this between space, with fact and fiction as an important theme.

Der Kiosk ist Transitzone. Verweilen, beeilen, Zigaretten kaufen, schnelles Wegbier, Zeitung von gestern, Kaffee von morgen, brühwarme Gerüchte. Hier kann eine Liebesgeschichte beginnen und der neuste Klatsch und Tratsch unter Leute kommen. Die Kneipe ist teuer – der Kiosk billig.

Er ist provisorische Handelszone für monetäre und emotionale Transaktion. Ursprünglich aus dem alten Ägypten und islamischen Kulturraum als Gartenpavillon stammend, kann er heute sinnbildhaft verstanden werden als urbane Oase, Ort der Mythenbildung und analogen Verbreitung. Hier liegen nachrichtliche Informationen neben Populärkultur: Spaß und Ernst ganz nah beieinander.

Wie kann man das noch auseinanderhalten? Wenn wir überlegen, „…daß Geschichte aus nichts anderem besteht als aus Geschichten, und daß diese Geschichten von Geschehnissen und Ereignissen berichten, und nicht von solchen oder anderen Kräften, deren Ablauf voraussagbar ist, oder von Ideen, die sich logisch entwickeln. Müßig und gefährlich werden sie nur, wenn man glaubt, sie als Einwände gegen die Realität des Geschehenen benutzen zu können, als enthielten sie positive Hinweise darauf, wie die Geschichte ‚eigentlich‘ sich hätte vollziehen ‚müssen‘.“ (Hannah Arendt 1972:Vita activa oder Vom tätigen Leben: 322f)

Der Kiosk ist Bild für das Dazwischen von Lug und Trug und der vermeintlichen faktischen Wahrheit. Wir wollen mit künstlerischen Arbeiten dieses Dazwischen zeigen.
